Kapawi Ecolodge and Reserve

Kapawi Ecolodge and Reserve is located in the most remote area of the Ecuadorian Amazon Basin. From Quito you will fly to Wayensa from where wooden canoes will take you to Kapawi in a comfortable 1 hour and half ride. The lodge accommodates up to 40 passengers and was built in accordance to the Achuar concept of Architecture (not a single nail was used). Environmentally friendly methods such as solar energy and trash recycling are also being utilized.

"The Kapawi lodge provides an array of activities characterized by their flexibility in order for you to set the pace at which you discover this whole new world.

As part of a small group (not larger than ten, leaded by a naturalist and an Achuar guide), you can fully customize your itineraries, which may include visits to the Achuar communities, hikes in the rain forest, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, camping, cayman watching and birdwatching, in accordance to the group's chosen degree of difficulty.

These activities range from short hikes on weel-defined trails and visits to the Achuar communities, and leisurely canoe and kaykas rides to more strenuos and demanding hikes that may take a day or even overnight camping after trekking through poorly defined trails or flooded areas. You will find however that every step in contact with the forest shall be worth it."

Nevertheless, most itineraries will include visits to the Achuar communities, hikes in the rain forest, canoeing in rivers and lakes as well as close observation of the flora and fauna. This is a true experience of the Amazon Rain Forest.

The tour package to Kapawi includes all your meals, daily excursions with a naturalist English speaking guide, accommodations, airfare Quito-Kapawi-Quito.

Not included: Achuar community fee of $10.00 (per passenger), soft beverages, alcoholic drinks, Government taxes

Sacha Lodge

Sacha Lodge is locateded 80 km east of Coca  -on a private 3,200 acre reserve- at a beautiful Pilchicocha lagoon, a little north of the Napo river . Sacha Lodge has been constructed of traditional rainforest materials and nestled well concealed into the lush surroundings. It has 20 double cabins with screened windows and bathrooms with hot water (each of the rooms has high thatched roofs and private shaded terraces with 2 double beds).  Electricity is provided by a diesel generator and there is light untill ten o'clock at night. The main building offers you a dining room, where international food is served, a bar and a lounge. Above the bar is a small lookout that offers views to the lake and the lodge.

DAY 01 MON. QUITO-AMAZON-SACHA LODGE

A short flight (40 minutes)  takes you over the high Andes and down to the Amazon frontier town of Puerto Francisco de Orellana (called Coca by locals). From here you travel by motorized canoe for  two and a half hours down the Napo River, followed by a short walk through thick palm forest to Sacha Lodge, your home for the next days.

DAY 02,03,04:TUE, WED, THU. SACHA LODGE

Days at Sacha Lodge are filled with discovery. During excursions, visitors are divided into small groups (max 6), each with its own native guide and bilingual naturalist. Native guides carry a lifetime of knowledge about the medicinal and functional uses of rainforest plants. They proudly display the wonders of their home environment, sometimes even offering a tasty treat like the strange lemon tasting ants that coexist in the stems of certain trees. Naturalists, educated in biology and ecology, translate for native guides and complement excursions with explanations of the scientific workings of the rainforest. Sacha Lodge has something for everyone. A favorite activity includes paddling dugout canoes along black water creeks and lakes past luxuriant lianas, bromeliads, and enormous palms. Swimming and piranha fishing are also popular (the piranha here are harmless, really!). And for the adventurous there are night walks and canoe trips in search of caiman and other nocturnal creatures. Sacha Lodge also offers three very unique sites to visitors. The first is a 130-foot observation tower that gives visitors a chance to get above the rainforest canopy for incredible views of the area. This is also a great place to observe toucans and macaws and with luck spot noisy howler monkeys or a three-toed sloth. The second site is the butterfly house where over 40 local butterfly species are bred. Visitors can see the process of breeding and raising these colorful insects and wander through the "flying room." Finally, there's the Yasuní Macaw Lick. Just a short distance from Sacha Lodge is Ecuador's most famous macaw lick, where visitors can observe dozens of the magnificently colored birds feeding on the clay's salt.

DAY 05 FRI. SACHA LODGE-COCA-QUITO

After an early breakfast, you'll head back up the Napo River for the flight back to Quito. At the airport, you'll be picked up and transferred to your hotel and have the evening free to enjoy Quito.
